Course Description:

This classroom training session will focus upon chlorine safety and technical information. The training will highlight existing CI resources freely available to water treatment users, including future resources. The objective is to educate end users on topics such as: basic regulatory framework, safe handling practices, storage, and emergency considerations.

Instructors: Ernest Nepa, John D'Alterio, George Cordero, and Daniel Stein

Ernest Nepa has 20 years of experience in chemical manufacturing and specialized expertise in emergency response. He joined Kuehne in 2006 as a Chemical Operator, where he developed extensive knowledge of chemical manufacturing operations, loading processes, and emergency response procedures.

Mr. Nepa is the Production Supervisor who oversees daily production operations, ensuring processes run safely and efficiently and comply with quality and regulatory standards. His role involves supervising production staff, monitoring equipment and workflows, coordinating production schedules, resolving operational issues, and promoting continuous improvement to meet production goals while maintaining a safe work environment. He has successfully completed the Chlorine Institute’s CHLOREP seminars, team training programs, serves as the lead instructor each year at MFA, and remains actively involved in Kuehne’s Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) initiatives and New Jersey TRANSCAER outreach activities.

John D’Alterio has more than 33 years of experience in chemical manufacturing and over 25 years of specialized emergency response expertise. He joined Kuehne in 1993 as a Chemical Operator, where he developed extensive knowledge of chemical manufacturing operations, loading processes, and emergency response procedures.

Mr. D’Alterio is a Special Projects Coordinator who is responsible for supporting the planning, execution, and successful completion of strategic initiatives. His role involves coordinating cross-functional teams, managing project timelines and deliverables, facilitating communication among stakeholders, and ensuring projects remain organized and on schedule. He is a key liaison between departments and leadership, contributing to operational efficiency, process improvement, and the effective implementation of high-priority organizational initiatives. He has successfully completed the Chlorine Institute’s CHLOREP seminars, team training programs, serves as the lead instructor each year at MFA, and remains actively involved in Kuehne’s Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) initiatives and New Jersey TRANSCAER outreach activities.

George Cordero has 25 years of experience in chemical manufacturing and specialized expertise in emergency response. He joined Kuehne in 2001 as a Chemical Operator, where he developed extensive knowledge of chemical manufacturing operations, loading processes, and emergency response procedures.

Mr. Cordero is the Lead Operator responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the production process and providing day-to-day leadership to operating personnel. He coordinates plant activities, monitors process performance, ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards, and addresses operational issues to meet production targets. He serves as a key link between frontline operations and management, supporting workforce development through training and mentoring, facilitating cross-departmental communication, and helping to drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance reliability, productivity, and operational excellence. He has successfully completed the Chlorine Institute’s CHLOREP seminars, team training programs, and remains actively involved in Kuehne’s Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) initiatives and New Jersey TRANSCAER outreach activities.

Daniel Stein is the Sr. Director Product Stewardship, employed by The Chlorine Institute, Inc. He has served in his current role for nearly 4 years and has primarily responsibility to staff CI’s Product Stewardship Issue Team (committee). This team focuses upon driving end user incidents related to CI’s mission chemicals to zero by creating new and improving existing resources. Daniel also works extensively on regulatory matters involving pesticides/disinfectants to support CI member Registrants. Daniel serves on American Water Works Association’s Disinfectants Standard Committee where he assists with Standard review/approval processes. Daniel has many experiences presenting training / technical information to operations/maintenance technicians and engineers throughout his time in this role and previous industry.
