This course explores the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in optimizing modern water and wastewater treatment systems. Participants will gain an understanding of how AI/ML technologies can enhance operational efficiency, predictive maintenance, process automation, and real-time decision-making across treatment facilities. Through case studies, hands-on exercises, and expert insights, the course will cover applications such as anomaly detection, energy optimization, water quality forecasting, and asset management. Instructor: Jim Knapp

Jim Knapp is a seasoned business development and training professional with extensive experience spanning over three decades across the water and wastewater treatment and medical device industries. Since 2010, he has specialized as a Business Development Specialist in the water and wastewater sector, with a strong focus on information technology. Prior to that, he built a long career from 1989 to 2010 in medical device sales and clinical training. Jim is also a certified PA DEP Instructor and currently serves as an Active Shooter Threat Assistant Instructor with J Reif Consulting and the PA Rural Water Association, a role he has held since 2023.

In addition to his instructional work as a trainer for the Pennsylvania Rural Water Association, Jim has held several leadership and advisory positions, including serving on the Board of Directors for DELCORA in Chester, Pennsylvania from 2019 to 2024, and as Director of Business Development for the Delaware County Commerce Center from 2011 to 2021. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from West Chester University. Throughout his career, Jim has earned numerous state primacy approvals across the United States, including Pennsylvania, New York, Alaska, and several others, reflecting his broad expertise and recognition in the field. He is currently the President of Sommers Valley Associates, LLC, where he continues to provide training, consulting, and industry leadership.
