In this session, you will learn the fundamentals of soil science. We will learn topics related to the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils and discuss some tools to better manage our soil environment. The learning objectives for this course are to describe: 1) how soils form and their importance in the environment, 2) the soil components that support plant growth (e.g., texture; bulk density; organic matter; fungus, bacteria, and other organisms; etc.), 3) differences between types of soils (loam, clay, sand), and 4) describe management practices necessary to maintain soil quality (e.g., fertility testing, composting, avoiding compaction).

Instructor: Amy Shober

Amy received a B.S. (1998) in Environmental Science and a B.A. (1998) in Chemistry from Virginia Tech, an M.S. (2002) in Soil Science from Penn State University and a Ph.D. (2006) in Environmental Soil Management from the University of Delaware. Amy is a professor and extension specialist in Nutrient Management and Environmental Quality at the University of Delaware. Her research and extension programs focus on fertilizer and manure management strategies that improve plant growth and production while minimizing negative impacts on the environment. Dr. Shober's extension team provides initial certification and continuing education for the Delaware Nutrient Management Program. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Delaware in 2012, Amy served as an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist at the University of Flordia Gulf Coast Research and Education Center where she worked in the area of urban nutrient, soil, and water management. She had published more than 60 refereed journal articles and 50 extension fact sheets.
